When Should You Start Seeing a Gynecologist?

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), females should start seeing a gynecologist between the ages of 13 and 15. We understand that seeing a gynecologist for the first time can be a scary experience, which is why we take extra care in seeing and treating younger patients.

Routine Health Screenings We Recommend

Regular screenings and check-ups are essential for maintaining a healthy reproductive system. These health screenings are also important for catching any health issues early on. We recommend the following routine health screenings at Women’s Health AZ.

Pap Test

A Pap test, also known as a Pap smear, is a routine screening designed to detect abnormal cells in the cervix, which could indicate cervical cancer or precancerous changes. During a Pap test, cells are collected from the cervix and examined under a microscope for any abnormalities. Women over 21 and those who have been sexually active for at least three years should have a Pap test every two to three years.

Pelvic Exam

During a pelvic exam, your gynecologist will check the health of your reproductive organs. including your uterus, ovaries, cervix, and vagina. This exam checks for any abnormalities and screens for conditions such as ovarian cysts, fibroids, or pelvic inflammatory disease. It’s important to note that pelvic exams are not the same as Pap tests. Pap tests check for cancer; pelvic exams do not.

Birth Control Options

Whether you’re looking to start a family or explore contraception options, Women’s Health AZ can help determine the best birth control options for you. From oral contraceptives and intrauterine devices (IUDs), our providers will discuss your contraceptive goals.

Mammograms

Mammograms are specialized X-ray screenings used to detect breast cancer in its early stages. Since breast cancer risk increases with age, mammograms are typically for women 40 and older. If you are 40 or older, we recommend scheduling a mammogram once a year.

STI Testing

Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) don’t exhibit any symptoms, which is why it’s so important to get tested. Some STIs, like chlamydia, can actually affect a woman’s fertility if left untreated. Schedule an appointment at Women’s Health AZ to get tested and reduce the risk of transmitting to sexual partners.
