Interpretation Services or Other Accommodations

The services of an interpreter or other accommodation are made available to patients or their companions upon request.  Patients should inform the practice/provider at time of scheduling or registration.

Interpretation by a patient’s family member or friend is discouraged due to issues of confidentiality and medical accuracy.

For deaf or hard of hearing patients, communication accommodations may include:

  • Sign language interpreters through Video Remote Interpretation (VRI)
  • On site sign language or tactile interpreters provided by contracted agencies
  • Writing materials and whiteboards for written communication
  • Any combination of the above

For patients with limited English proficiency who prefer to receive their health care information in a language other than English, accommodations may include:

  • Video Remote Interpreters (VRI)
  • Over the phone Interpreters (OPI)
  • Contracted on site interpreters
  • Translation services for written documents

For blind or low vision patients, communication accommodation may include:

  • Guidance and verbal instructions regarding surroundings and obstacles
  • Documents provided in enlarged font size
  • Staff reading and providing information about treatment or procedure

For patients with speech impairments, one or more of the following aids will be made available:

  • Writing materials
  • Communication board
  • A laptop or a tablet
